Technology is moving step-by-step towards making androids of the future. And development of fake skin is in fact important towards creating the real impression. Lately, this artificial skin was revealed at the 24th Annual Conference of the Robotics Society at Okayama University.
The fake skin takes off the feel of real skin by combining a 1-cm thick dermis of elastic silicone covered by a 0.2-mm thick epidermis of firm urethane. Perfect impression of the skin is due to myriad tiny hexagonal indentations etched into the urethane epidermis.
This ‘Skin’ mimics the real one so perfectly that not only people but also the equipment for assessing mechanical properties of skin confirmed that the artificial skin had characteristics resembling human skin.
