Taking inspiration from the natural world the scientists at NASA have created a robot which uses a device called ‘earbot‘ that helps it maintain its balance.

The device is based on ‘Cochlea‘ a section in the ear which uses clusters of sensor cell receptors and nerve fibers to help humans maintain balance.

The earbot is a Styrofoam golf ball -like structure containing clusters of micro electro mechanical sensors used to sense direction, motion, acceleration and rotation. Then first robot to be implanted with an earbot will be an eight legged scorpion like robot and the earbot will be used to keep the robots camera level while it moves.

The earbot is part of a NASA goal to develop walking robots that can travel over tough terrain. NASA is also thinking of a mother robot which will carry one or more than one robot to the desired location and then the robots will dismount and search the area of interest.
