Mr. Spike and Mrs. Candy are best friends of 13-year-old bedridden Achim Nurse. No, they are not her parents but a pair of robots that help him to keep up with his studies and friends.
Achim controls the two robots with the help of a video game console type remote to communicate with his teacher and classmates miles away. Mr. Spike stays at his bedside and Mrs. Candy connects the little boy to the classroom by staying in the classroom. Mrs. Candy can easily move on its four-wheel base and displays live pictures of Achim in the classrooms. Achim can actually zoom in to read the class board via the provided joystick and maneuver the robot for all other activities as per the requirement.
The program, called PEBBLES (Providing Education By Bringing Learning Environments to Students), is delivering impeccable results by connecting students to their classrooms. Developed by Telbotics Inc. in Toronto, the program aims at connecting any two points in the world via a pair of robots costing around $70,000.
